Abdus Samad is a 50 year old man from Satkhira with a family of six. He worked as a day laborer as well as a local fruit vendor. In early June of this year, he fell from a tree while attempting to pick fruit. After regaining consciousness, he was unable to move any parts of his body and was taken to the nearest government hospital. Because of his serious injuries he was sent to Satkhira general hospital and then onto Dhaka Medical College where he remained for one day. There he was diagnosed a tetraplegic as a result of his fall and was referred to CRP for treatment and rehabilitation.
He arrived at CRP three days after his accident and the CRP multidisciplinary team began his therapeutic treatment program. When he first arrived he could not even sit up but after five months of treatment he is able to sit with a support. However, due to his high spinal cord damage and limited improvement possibilities, he will require personal care support and be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
Samad was the sole wage earner in his family, and because of this life changing event will now need to find other means of supporting them. He is planning to start a grocery shop in his village with the help of his son. However, he will still need some financial support from some generous donors so that he can successfully face and overcome his new life challenges.
