I am Joanna Scull from UK. I have just finished my studies in Occupational Therapy from York St. John University and I will soon start my job as an OT (Occupational Therapist). My University offers placements for OT, here, at CRP. I stayed here for one month (from June 22 to July 21, 2016). At CRP I observed the SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) inpatient unit and the Occupational Therapists there. I was interested to see the health infrastructure in a developing country. I have volunteered in India and Nepal before as well and enjoyed their culture and thought Bangladesh would be similar. It has been very interesting compare OT in Bangladesh to OT in the UK.
I had no experience in SCI before so I had little expertise. In the short time here I felt, I learnt from the staff rather than sharing my skills. I helped staff practice English frequently however. I was amazed by CRP and the work they do, they help so many people and offer a unique service in Bangladesh. Mostly I liked how friendly and welcoming all staff and patients have been during my time here. I feel I have gained further knowledge of the Occupational Therapy process and gain experience of working with patients with spinal cord injuries. This visit has also added to my further experience of exploring Asia.
